 There are better trivia games out there Mar 24, 2009

I very rarely write reviews for my purchases but i felt this was necessary. I pre-ordered this game (a first for me) and was very excited about its release. Boy was i disappointed! As other reviewers have commented, the typeface is incredibly small and difficult to read even on a 42" HDTV. The announcer's comments are annoying and the questions are incredibly difficult. Over all this game was not fun and I was waiting for it to be over so I could pop in my Smarty Pants game. Unless you and all of your friends are extreem intelectuals, this game is just boring. I would highly recomend the game Smarty Pants: Trivia for Everyone as a fun and interactive trivia game.

This game should be a lot of fun, but it is all but impossible to play. Not only is the typeface used for the questions ridiculously small, they used a font with a thin stroke weight. Then just to make it even more unpleasant the questions are black text against a colored background. The only thing I can think of is that EA must have done absolutely ZERO usability testing! A major video game producer should be doing much better than this. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Can't read the small text Mar 15, 2009

I thought this would be a good and fun game to play with guests when entertaining or to play with signifiant other. I find that the text on the screen is really, really, small. I was really hoping that the game would speak the questions out loud but that is not the case. I have a 42-inch plasma tv, and despite the fact that it is a relatively large TV the text for the questions is really small. There are some fun twists to the game that I like, but the fact that some people are faster readers than others and the fact that the font is so small gives others an unfair advantage when playing multiplayer. All in all the game is just OK.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME! ! ! ! Rent the game first to see if you find the cons of the game few enough to tolerate. Trivial Pursuit is an awesome game that I have enjoyed for over 20 years. I LOVE TRIVIAL PURSUIT. So why the 1 star? Seeing that Trivial Pursuit was available for the Wii I purchased it and eagerly played it with my family and friends. After only playing 3 games of the Wii version of Trivial Pursuit I'm done. The old board version will be back out for future Trivial Pursuit games/parties. This is a shame because the potential for an incredibly awesome Wii version is virtually unlimited, but the makers of the game simply choose to cheap shot it and put out the least about amount of money hoping for the greatest return and profit and created not only a less than impressive product, but an unplayable product.
There are 8 areas of serious concern for this Wii version of Trivial Pursuit that make this game completely unplayable. 1st, there is no Jr. Version so younger players can not play. 2nd, you set up a profile for each player including if that player is male or female. During a player's turn while rolling the dice you hear that male or female player's profile character giggling. This giggling gets annoying very quickly. With each and every roll of the dice from each and every player... you hear some agitating giggle. 3rd, there is an unseen but sarcastic narrator that comments on each and every question. Not only does this mocking narrator become overly irritating with his rhetoric, but you are taunted with "boo's" when you respond with an incorrect answer. In short order this narrator goes from a slight annoyance to completely inflaming all the players. 4th, the game movements of your marker distracts from the game with various slow animations and sounds. Sometimes the marker "walks" to the next location on the board, other times it will sprout insect like wings and fly/buzz over to the next location. Or it can turn into a spaceship or submarine. The cutesy antics wear on your nerves very quickly, as most people that play Trivial Pursuit want to do just that, play Trivial Pursuit not watch drawn out time consuming animations - over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again - that slows down the game. The game has juvenile animations and marker movements but no juvenile level questions... go figure? OK, I hear you... you're saying to yourself, "What's the big deal? This reviewer is too sensitive, a grump, come on guy, get with it." Granted, these issues can be seen as minor annoyances that can be overlooked... until you're actually exposed to them. But let's now look at the actual faults that make this game unplayable.
5th area of concern that actually makes this game unplayable is the Maps that are used in the geography category. The maps used do not have any lines showing separation/boundaries between countries, states or other political or geographical areas of importance. Also, the bubble areas of the multiple choice answers are not labeled. You can't tell if you're clicking on the Grand Canyon, AZ or Las Vegas, NV. You are simply guessing - a shot in the dark - even if you know for fact the correct answer to the question. You may know the correct answer to the question, however due to the poor quality of maps, lack of labels and close proximity of other multiple choice answers, there is a very high probability that you will click on what legitimately is the correct area on the map, but the map will show you wrong. This is maddening to say the least.
6th is the size of the pictures used. You will be given 4 different photographs to review and answer a question. The pictures are so small - even on a 52 inch HD screen - that it is extremely difficult to make out any detail to answer the highly detailed questions with. The pictures need to be at least twice as large as they currently are. With the timer moving against you a quick last second guess is sometimes your only option.
7th is the timer itself. The questions are not spoken to you, but appear in a rectangular speech bubble similar to what a printed comic book cartoon character's speech would appear in. This speech bubble has black text and has the background color of whatever category the question is in. The entire background starts off completely colored but as the timer runs the background color moves, or empties from right to left leaving behind more and more blank white background as the colored background moves to the left until no color is left and time runs out. This poses two issues. First, the contrast between colored backgrounds against black text is difficult to read, and secondly the moving colored line/area further complicates the contrast issue making reading the question even more difficult.
The 8th area of concern is in fact the final nail in the coffin of the Wii Trivial Pursuit. As noted by just about every other reviewer, those giving good reviews... the text of the questions are too small. Yes, even on a 52 inch HD screen, the text is in fact, too small. But where other reviewers stop, I also offer that the text's resolution is extremely soft. Not only is the text small, but the edges of the small letters are blurry and blend in with neighboring letters. This leads to a huge loss of time as the distracting colored background timer is running while you're trying to make out the small blurred letters and words of the question. And it's not long before you have a headache from straining and focusing so hard to read the words and make out the questions. Adjust and tweak your TV settings all you want - it's not the TV nor is it your sight - it's the game.
Playing the Wii version of Trivial Pursuit is frustrating. Personally, I play games for the entertainment value, not the frustration value. The game has irritating sounds/speech that you can not control - except for turning the volume completely down/off, the marker movement slows the game down, maps and photographs are unusable and the text is far too difficult to read to make for an enjoyable time. Although I love Trivial Pursuit, the Trivial Pursuit product for the Wii game system is junk... complete unadulterated junk. As far as I'm concerned this product boarders on the edge of fraud and theft. To simply say that the product is a disappointment is far from what reality truly is. It is for this reason that I STRONGLY RECOMMEND RENTING THIS GAME BEFORE DECIDING TO BUY. After renting you'll be in a much better position to decide if this game warrants your hard earned money or not. My opinion, no way in blazes would I spend one cent on this game. It's so frustrating to play that I doubt you'd even rent it a second time.

Okay, I am a geek and I love trivia games. With that said, the quality of the graphics in this game was very disappointing. The biggest tirvia question on the geography questions is WTF kinda map is that??? The test is very hard to read, as well. Okay if the price was in the $10 range, but a rip-off at the price offered.
