1All of us were disappointed  Aug 03, 2009 By E. Woodland
I like nearly any video game, my wife is a casual biathlon participant and my daughter LOVES Wii. None of liked this game. The balance board is used, but the only fuction is to steer slightly left or slightly right. The courses do not need any quick response steering or back and forth. You barely use the balance board, and that is to only slightly veer one way or another. The skiing motion is done all with the controller and nunchuck. You simply move them both forward and then both back in unison and at a moderate pace. Extremely boring and little similarity to cross country skiing.

The only part of the game anyone liked was the shooting. My wife (the biathlon person) liked that the shooting was a little difficult. The game introduces a somewhat random sway to the aiming based having a tired skier. You have to time "pulling the trigger" to anticipate when the sights will be over the target. My daughter and I did not really like the shooting either.

Overall, we are all very disappointed. After trying the game for several days, we have not touched it in weeks. It looks like we wasted our money. I HOPE Wii will improve the skiing controls and incorporate the balance board to make this a decent game. It is rare that my wife was eager to get a vidoe game, so my daughter and I were excited to have her join us, but this game sure killed that fun.

5Ski and Shoot is not 'Run and Gun'; it's better.  Jun 07, 2009 By Colorado Snakebite
Ski and Shoot is NOT your typical 'run and gun' game; it requires steady nerves, skill, good judgment, quick reactions, and patience. I'm halfway through the 24 event Pro season and just beat my chief rival by 3 seconds by conserving just enough Stamina for a sprint to the finish line.

Ski and Shoot is an addicting, fast paced simulation of the Biathalon, a sport combining cross country skiing and target shooting. An event consists of a cross country 'leg', 5 rifle shots at targets, a second cross country leg, another 5 rifle shots, and a final cross country leg to the finish line. A penalty lap is required for each missed shot (each miss adds about 10 seconds to the total time).

Like real biathalons, slower skiers can beat faster skiers by being better shots. Biathaletes have different skiing and shooting skills; so each event has frequent changes in leaders as hill climbing, sprinting, gliding, timing of moves, and shooting all come into play. As the game progresses, you customize your character by deciding what to practice; not only do you get better, but your character builds skill, stamina, and power.

Adding to the excitement are the different types of races. Mass Starts have all skiers starting at the same time; there's much jostling for position. Sprints have skiers start a few seconds about; you're racing the clock. Pursuits have skiers start in finishing order of an earlier Sprint; you're trying to catch and pass the leader.

The mechanics of skiing are handled well although a bit confusing at first. You have to steer while managing your Stamina and Power. You apply Power by moving the WiiMote and Nunchuck back and forth at different speeds to adjust to the terrain. Too much Power drains Stamina, but you have to drain some Stamina to win. Just the skiing is a constant adjustment of Power, technique (sprint, glide, or ski), and steering. I steer with the Balance Board although you can steer with just the WiiMote.

Shooting requires aiming, of course, and steadying your aim by holding your breath (A button). If you have low Stamina, your aim wavers. My sequence is: aim close to a target, hold breath, make final adjustment, pull trigger, and reload (Z button); repeat 5 times and get moving.

Each event in the game lasts about 10 minutes. There are three 'leagues', and you have to win a league before advancing to the next league. The amateur seasons are about 9 races plus the 4 yearly championship races. There's a lot of racing, but you need the practice to advance.

2Not for the avid skier, but perhaps for the sports fan  Mar 14, 2010 By Kevin L. Smathers "-kls"
The graphics are crisp and clear, and evoke much of what I love about real life skiing, but the gameplay and controls are not in theme and not interesting to play. It is like creating a formula driving sim that concentrates on the vehicle dynamics instead of on driving.

Ski and Shoot is a simulation of the Winter Biathlon, so naturally it is broken into two parts, a cross country skiing simulation and a shooting mini-game. The two are inter related by your stamina, or how out of breath you are -- coming into the shooting range winded the targets will move around quite a bit even when holding your breath to steady your aim, although even at its worst the targets are pretty easy to hit. Leaving the range your pulse will have slowed depending on how much time you spent finishing your shots.

The flaw, I think, is in the skiing simulation which the game designers decided should be centered around the strategic and tactical aspects of winning a race rather than around actually skiing. As a result you neither move nor direct yourself in any way that would be related to skiing. As a long time skier I find leaning to the right on my balance board in order to turn right very counter intuitive as I naturally want to put my weight to the outside of each turn.

And the whole simulated aspect of stamina is very hard to relate to; I'm just standing on a board so I'm not at all winded yet my alter ego can't move for a minute without being completely out of breath. The unreality is magnified by the extremely condensed track used for the race; the game designers assume that no one would really want to ski so shorten the loop from a typical 5 km to something that feels like about 0.2 km. I would much rather have had the game use a step counter so that I could run in place and actually feel some semblance of my game counterpart to maintain the illusion that I am participating in a Biathlon.

The whole sensitivity surrounding how you steer yourself down the paths seems lame as well. It simply isn't that hard to ski where you want to go, nor is there any magical braking power in getting too close to the edges of a cross country slope. What the whole game is missing for me is the ability to make me feel like I am actually cross country skiing.

Perhaps a sports fan who is into the strategic aspects of winning Biathlon races would like it, but if your interest is for the cross country skiing, this doesn't cut it.
