Simple, fun, addictive pirating fun Sep 30, 2010
By R. Faulk I would say that the title of this review pretty much sums the game up! Storyline: Basically you are the son of a rich family, who is wronged and loses its wealth. The rest of your family is kidnapped, but you escape. Then 10 years later, you set out to avenge and rescue your family. Very simple story. Gameplay: When you start out the game you have one ship (which you get to customize). The basic gameplay formula is that you are a pirate, searching for his family, attacking ships, and stopping at ports. During most of the game you will be sailing around in your ship, which is surprisingly fun and addicting. When you decide to attack a ship, you go into an on-seas battle between you and the other ship. If you decide to ram into the other ship, which I recommend that you do, you jump aboard the enemy ship and start a swordfighting sequence in which you must hack, slash, jump, and dodge, at your opponent (there is no blood involved, hence the E10 rating). Upon victory you can decide whether you want to sink and loot the ship, or add it to your fleet. Often times if you decide to sink the ship, many sailors from that ship ask you to let them join your crew. Other than this main gameplay setting, you can do minigames ranging from bombing cities, to dancing and trying to win the heart of fair maidens (either my character is a terrible dancer, or is just plain ugly because I haven't succeeded in this yet!). Although this basic gameplay formula may sound simplistic, trust me time, flies when you are playing this game, and you will spend hours on it. Graphics: Good graphics. They may not be quite as polished as some first party nintendo games such as Mario Galaxy 2 or Metroid Other M, but they are not going to disappoint anyone either. Bottom Line: Great game, good graphics, fun story. I got it the day after it came out, and have played it for hours without being bored of it at all. I would recommend it to any pirate fan, or anyone who wants an awesome game. If you just want a pirate game for the wii, trust me, this is the one to get (don't waste your money on any other games such as Pirates: Hunt For Blackbeard's Booty) HAPPY GAMING, AND GO NINTENDO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2 Player is LAME Dec 29, 2010
By TM
"avid reader"
I LOVE this game and have had it for years for my PC. It is a blast and totally worth playing. However, I just bought it for my Wii because it is supposed to be 2 player in the Wii version. It's really NOT. Yes, a second player can kind of play, but the second player can only tilt the sails while the 1st player is playing, fly at the opponent occasionally as a parrot during fencing battles (the parrot doesn't generate more than the opponent swiping at it with his hand--so pointless), and push buttons to "be a musician" while the 1st player is dancing--also very lame and pointless as it has no bearing whatsoever to the game.
So, I'd say definitely buy this game, but plan on it being a single-player game.

True to the original DOS game from many years ago! Oct 17, 2010
By D. Rutledge The game has much of the joy from the original pirates game... what lost a * for it was the idiotic dancing to impress the Gov's daughter. Seriously, they could have done much better, and it is way to PC. I seem to remember also that you could do more in the old version. The fighting sequences are somewhat canned. But the gist of the game is great, and the sailing can be as frustrating as the real thing.
One irritant in both versions is if you don't split the spoils within a year, your crew mutinies and sails off with your other ships and goods. When you are trying to find your family, this is annoying!!!

Really fun game, could use a better manual Jan 16, 2011
By RichK A tough one to rate. I bought it because I have the PC version, and it is really fun. The wii version keeps that fun, and there are many minor modifications, some good, some not so much. However I expected a "new and improved" version in this and it was really a "new but much-the-same" version.
For the positive:
It's simple. The game is just plain fun. You can spend hours sailing the seas, chasing villians, finding treasure, and swordfighting the bad guys. It is highly addictive and very enjoyable.
Now the negatives:
My biggest complaint on this one is the almost total lack of any instructions. The PC version came with a 150 page manual which described in depth the player's goals and explained how to play all the mini-games, It had stategy tips, screenshots, tables of all important and not-so-important statistics, and so on. The wii version came with only a six page pamphlet, and four of those pages deal with the legal disclaimers and warranty info. The remaing two pages have just a chart showing what the wiimote controls do in certain situations. There is no explanation of the player's overall objective, no helpful hints, no nothing. If I had not played the PC version extensively, I think that I would be very lost.
It is also disappointing that the controls were not retooled for the wii better. In the PC game, most of the game is played using the keys of the numpad. In this one, they just mapped most of those functions onto the d-pad and wii buttons. Occasionally you have to flick the wiimote, but there is no finesse. And often the controls are not intuitive. If you didn't know it already, it would be painfully obvious from the start that this is a PC game adapted for the wii, not a game specifically developed for the wii.
Don't be mislead, this really is not a multi-player game. The box says it is two-player, but the second player only joins during a few of the mini-games. For most of the time, the second player is just a observer on the sidelines while the main player is exploring the storyline.
Lastly, there is still too much dancing. Why is it that a game that promises to "live the life" of a pirate gives as much emphasis to ballroom dancing as it does to naval battles and to sword duels?

Sid Meier's Pirates Rocks! Dec 04, 2010
By John Hershey When I first saw this game on the shelf of a local game store, my jaw dropped. I had no idea at all that my favorite computer game, Sid Meier's Pirates, was coming to Wii. I have spent hundreds of hours playing the newest version of the PC game since it's come out in 2004, and quite honestly, maybe thousands (yes thousands) of hours since the first time I bought it back in 1987 (my very first video game I ever bought). I have had this game for about a week now, and have a VERY hard time putting it down. The Wii version is a bit different, you can not go onto land and look for treasure, you stay on the ship to do that, and the dancing, man, is that hard? I had a hard time with the '04 version dancing, the Wii is twice as hard (but no less fun). This game is one of the greatest games to come out on Wii, in fact, if I did not own a Wii when I saw this game, I would of bought one just for this game. My favorite part is signing up with one country, and then attacking that said country. Get to the highest ranking for the other countries, then, attack them. Even if I am forced to retire before finishing my missions, I truly enjoy playing this game. The Wii version is also 2 player capable, though I have yet to try playing it with another (not sure how that'd work, as it is more geared towards a single player mode)
